Foraging for Beauty

One of my favorite things to do is forage around for beautiful things, often from my own backyard or my neighbors’ (with permission, of course!). Between us, we have lots of herbs, leaves, flowers, and foliage all year round. Sometimes, it takes a little bit of creative vision to see what is in front of you.

For example, I have this gorgeous maple tree that is currently littering my entire backyard with bright red leaves.

When I say entire backyard, I mean it. It’s mostly red. Here is part of my veggie plot, which is basically just weeds and maple leaves now!

Instead of raking wet leaves (which I still really need to do), I snipped a few boughs and decided to put them in a bud vase for a little extra cheer indoors. If you haven’t noticed, it’s been raining the last week or so and we are welcoming the beginning of the long cold dark. What a difference these are making on the mantle!

You can do this in your own backyard, too! Whether you have gorgeous foliage, a few last flowers, or some fragrant herbs, I would encourage you to go out there with a pair of snips and see what you can scrounge up. Even simple foliage can help brighten up a room this time of year.
